Favorite Tool Brands of Each State

237 tool brands were examined with Google Trends to find out each state’s favorite.

With United States as the region and 2016 as the timeframe, each tool and equipment brand was input to Google Trends to find the state it was most searched relative to total searches.

Your state’s favorite tool/equipment brand is not the most searched in total, but the most searched relative to your state’s total searches compared to all other states.

For example, Google Trends data for Bernie Sanders in 2016 shows he’s most popular in Vermont. This makes sense because it’s his home state.

  • Without Google Trends to adjust the data, California would emerge the state he’s most favored because 62 times more people live there
  • With Google Trends, we can see he’s more than twice as popular in Vermont than any other state

This map shows each state’s favorite tool/equipment brand:

Each States Favorite Tool and Equipment Brand

Reviewing 237 tool and equipment brands’ data reveals interesting regional favorites. Some explainable. Some not.

Kobalt, Lowe’s home brand, is the favorite tool brand in North Carolina. Upon further inspection, you can see Lowe’s has their Global Headquarters outside of Charlotte, housing thousands of employees. Is Kobalt being searched disproportionately in NC because of its connection to Lowe’s?

Yamaha, with its popular dirt-bikes, ATVs, outboard boat motors and snowmobiles, is the favorite tool & equipment brand of Alaska. This makes sense because a high proportion of the population requires the alternate transport vehicles Yamaha offers.

Hilti is most popular in Oklahoma for no known reason. Hilti Headquarters are in Dallas, not Oklahoma. Hilti doesn’t have any special sponsorship of stadiums or teams in the region. Nor any local libraries, parks or museums named after them. Oklahomans’ must just love Hilti tools.

Kohler, a small engine manufacturing company (amongst other things) is the favorite tool & equipment brand of Wisconsin. Why? Probably because it has its headquarters in Kohler, Wisconsin. It should be noted, Google Trends allows you to differentiate between Kohler (location) and Kohler (manufacturing company) so the data is telling the story of the company, not the place in this instance.

Westinghouse in Pennsylvania makes sense. It was founded there and Pittsburgh was always its home. It is a name synonymous with the American electric industry and lives on in various forms. For instance: Did you know CBS – the media company – is actually a morph of Westinghouse? Here’s how. Westinghouse bought CBS in the 90s. Over a few years, as TV became wildly profitable, Westinghouse became CBS Corporation (as you know it today). Its other business units were sold off. The rights to namesake “Westinghouse” went to Toshiba. Siemens owns the power generation business. And British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. the nuclear power business.

You can see the map above with the logo of each brand in the state most interested in it. Below is a more in-depth look at each state and possible reasons why the brands are favored in the areas they are.

In-depth Look at Each State’s Favorite Tool & Equipment Brand

Find out the brand, what tool the brand is known for, the number of searches it receives nationwide each year and why that brand might peak the state’s interest the most.

1. Alabama

  • Brand: Poulan
  • Tools & equipment known for: Lawn and garden equipment
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 240,000

People of Alabama are more interested in Poulan products than any other tool brand relative to their total searches and compared to other states. It is not clear why. Poulan is one of several brand names used by the Husqvarna Group of Sweden. Poulan was originally founded and based in Louisiana, but it is now based out of Charlotte, North Carolina.

2. Alaska

  • Brand: Yamaha Motorsports
  • Tools & equipment known for: Snowmobiles, ATVs, motorcycles, outboard boat motors, dirt-bikes, generators and race kart engines
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 3,720,000

The favorite power tool and equipment brand of Alaskans is Yamaha. This seems reasonable given the remoteness and terrain of the region. Many people require off-road transportation and Yamaha makes popular snowmobiles, dirt-bikes, ATVs, boat motors and more. Other states where Yamaha was very popular in 2016 are North Dakota and Wyoming.

3. Arizona

AEG is a brand owned by Electrolux. However, it is licensed and manufactured by Techtronic Industries (TTi). They offer the full range of power tools and are considered a good affordable brand with long warranties. Why the brand is so popular in California is a mystery. AEG was also popular in Vermont and Colorado.

6. Colorado

  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 49,200

7. Connecticut

  • Brand: Stanley Tools
  • Tools & equipment known for: Hand tools and storage
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 192,000

Cousins Frederick and Henry Stanley separately founded hardware and hand tool companies in Connecticut in 1843 and 1857, respectively. Frederick’s was called ‘Stanley Works’ and Henry’s called ‘Stanley Rule and Level Company’. In 1920 they merged. Today, the Stanley brand is a hugely popular hand tools brand name within the Stanley Black & Decker $10 billion company. It is most likely the Connecticut favorite because its headquarters are located in New Britain, Connecticut. The company employs thousands within the state and its presence is well known.

  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 14,520,000

Everyone knows the Honda brand. Their total annual searches in the U.S. is over 14 million. No other tool & equipment brand comes close. The fact they are the favorite power equipment of Florida is most likely due to their highly popular outboard boat motors, small engines and generators. I mean, clearly it isn’t their snow blowers.

10. Georgia

  • Brand: Proto Tools
  • Tools & equipment known for: Hand tools and storage
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 98,400

Out of the 637 brands checked in the hand & power tool, tool gear, power equipment and construction machinery industries, Georgians’ favorite was Proto Tools. In Georiga,Proto Tools had the highest search interest of all (compared to the other states). Why is this? It’s hard to say. But maybe it has to do with Proto Industrial Tools, Inc. having HQ in Conyers, GA?

11. Hawaii

  • Tools & equipment known for: Power tools and equipment
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 576,000

  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 144,000

Plugging Karcher (Company) into Google Trends shows Idaho as the place that favors it the most. In fact, they search for Karcher more than twice as much as any other state. Karcher makes pressure washers and other cleaning technology. Although it was Karcher (the pressure washer company) plugged in to Google Trends, it is interesting to note: There is a Karcher Mall, Karcher Interchange and Karcher Road in Nampa, Idaho.

13. Illinois

  • Brand: Caterpillar (CAT)
  • Tools & equipment known for: Construction & mining equipment, engines and gas turbines
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 2,280,000

Caterpillar has 2.28 million annual national searches and is one of the 30 major companies comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average stock market index. Illinois is the state most interested in Caterpillar. The reason Illinois has a high proportion of its total searches for Caterpillar is most likely because CAT’s global headquarters is in Peoria, Illinois. With over 115,000 employees worldwide, Caterpillar has 15,000 in Peoria. It is far and away the largest employer of the city. In addition to the world headquarters, CAT also has the naming rights to a baseball field (CAT’s Dozer Park), a visitors centre and a museum showcasing its past, present and future. Needless to say, there is much reason for Caterpillar to be in the minds of the people of Illinois.

14. Indiana

  • Brand: Dixie Chopper
  • Tools & equipment known for: Industrial zero-turn mowers
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 180,000

Dixie Chopper has the most disproportionately high search volume in Indiana. This is most likely because they have headquarters in Coastesville, Indiana. They are widely known as having the world’s fastest ride-on mowers.

15. Iowa

  • Brand: Kreg Tool Company
  • Tools & equipment known for: Kreg Jigs. And other woodworking clamping, joining, cutting and measuring tools

  • Tools & equipment known for: Skilsaw portable circular saw and other power tools
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 60,000

SKIL started as ‘Michel Electric Handsaw Co.’ with the invention of the first portable electric handsaw initially developed to help farmers cut sugar cane in New Orleans. Over the years it has become known for all their power tools, but their saws (it is called a SKILSAW for a reason) are their claim to fame. Kansas is where the brand is favored most.

17. Kentucky

  • Brand: Hitachi
  • Tools & equipment known for: Power tools, electric & gas outdoor power equipment and construction machinery
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 888,000

Hitachi is the favorite power equipment and tool brand of Kentucky. Compared to all other state’s, a larger percentage of total Google searches were made for Hitachi in Kentucky than any other state. Hitachi’s Automotive Systems Inc. company has HQ in KY. However, they only employ a few hundred so it can’t be the reason for the popularity. A better guess why Hitachi is highly searched is the dominance of Hitachi mining machinery and the fact KY is the 3rd largest coal miner/producer in the country. In addition, Kentucky’s largest manufacturing industry is cars and car parts, which Hitachi provides factory machinery and equipment for.

18. Louisiana

  • Brand: Snapper
  • Tools & equipment known for: Lawn-care tools, especially push and riding mowers

In 2000, Hong Kong based TTI Group (also own Dirt Devil, Hoover, Milwaukee, Homelite and AEG) bought the Ryobi tool business for $123 million from Ryobi Limited. The tools are sold exclusively at Home Depot and also through e-commerce.

20. Maryland

  • Brand: Black + Decker
  • Tools & equipment known for: Lawn & garden equipment and drills, saws, sanders and other power tools
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 888,000

Maryland is very interested in Black & Decker brand probably because they have major headquarters in Towson, Maryland. With thousands of workers and a major presence in the community it is no wonder it is the favorite tool brand search of the region.

21. Massachusetts

  • Brand: ArborTech
  • Tools & equipment known for: Woodworking tools
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 28,800

ArborTech USA is based in Northborough, MA. Since the brands total searches are very low a few extra will make it disproportionately popular compared to other states. It is therefore almost certainly because they have home base in MA they are the favorite tool brand of the state.

22. Michigan

  • Brand: Atlas Copco
  • Tools & equipment known for: Air compressors, and lots of other industrial power tools and equipment
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 144,000

Atlas Copco is a large company known for their portable and stationary compressors, power tools and construction equipment. They have over 100 locations across the United States. Their Tools & Assembly Systems subsidiary is based 30 miles north of Detroit in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The location is only home to 250 employees so it is unlikely this is the reason for it being popular in the region.

23. Minnesota

  • Brand: Toro
  • Tools & equipment known for: Mowers, snow blowers and other industrial landscape equipment
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 696,000

Minnesota had the highest proportion of searches for The Toro Company, making it the state’s favorite tool & equipment brand. Toro is one of the most popular landscape and grounds equipment brands in the world. It shows. With 696,000 nationwide searches a year and $2.4 billion in sales, it is clearly popular everywhere – not just Minnesota. Toro has its HQ in Bloomington, a town of 83,000. It employs close to 1,000 people at its HQ, which consists of 75,000 sq-ft of offices and 450,000 sq-ft of warehouse and manufacturing.

24. Mississippi

  • Brand: Metabo
  • Tools & equipment known for: Professional power tools
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 43,200

Metabo Tools are widely used by professionals in industrial metalworking and building renovation. The reason Mississippi has the most interest in Metabo Tools is not clear. The state’s two largest industries are agriculture and manufacturing so it’s possible these trades love Metabo down south.

25. Missouri

  • Tools & equipment known for: Hand & power tools (Ryobi owned by Emerson) and wet/dry vacs (Workshop and ProTeam brands owned by Emerson)

26. Montana

  • Brand: WORX
  • Tools & equipment known for: Electric lawn & garden power equipment and power tools
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 504,000

WORX is quite new to the lawn and garden equipment game, having been introduced in 2004 by the Positec Tool Corp. of China. They are the favorite tool & equipment brand in Montana. Rockwell Tools, the favorite tool brand of Nebraska (see below) is a sister brand to WORX. Both sit under the Positec umbrella and are sold out of the American HQ in Charlotte, North Carolina. WORX electric trimmer was originally sold via TV infomerical. The brand can now be found at the big box stores: Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Walmart and Costco.

That year he met the Positec CEO (who was planning WORX brand tools) and the two discussed the Rockwell Tools brand plans. They decided to join forces. Soon after, Tom started Positec USA in partnership to sell WORX and Rockwell power tools and lawn & garden equipment in America.

Between them are 50+ well-known niche and general tool brands you probably thought were independent.

30. New Jersey

  • Brand: Snow Joe
  • Tools & equipment known for: Snow blowers (Snow Joe) and pressure washers (Sun Joe)
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 99,600

Snow Joe was founded by then 17 year old Long Branch, New Jersey native  Joseph Cowen. It was originally just a snow thrower but now the company (and sister company, Sun Joe) sell a range of garden tools and equipment. New Jersey isn’t exactly known for its high snowfall. Likely, the reason for Snow Joe’s popularity is the 100s of employees and locals searching for it (along with the low nationwide search volumes).

31. New Mexico

  • Brand: Dremel
  • Tools & equipment known for: Rotary tools and saws
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 1,092,000

  • Tools & equipment known for: Pumping products for commercial and residential needs
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 108,000

Liberty Pumps has HQ in New York, but with only 108,000 searches a year nationwide it is hard to believe that has anything to do with it being most favored by New Yorkers. They sell a popular sump pump recommended by plumbers and also utility, sewage and speciality pumps for commercial and residential use. Liberty Pumps brand was also very popular in New Jersey.

33. North Carolina

Kobalt is Lowe’s high quality brand with Task Force and Blue Hawk being their budget lines. Lowe’s is based in Mooresville, NC so maybe that has something to do with the high interest in Kobalt tools in the region. It’s hard to be sure. But the HQ is massive and home to 12,000 employees so there’s good chance it’s the reason.

34. North Dakota

  • Brand: John Deere
  • Tools & equipment known for: Lawn-care equipment, farm & forestry & construction machinery
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 3,240,000

Of all the state’s North Dakota has the highest relative interest in John Deere. John Deere is one of the most iconic brands in America. Having been founded by John Deere in 1837 it is one of the oldest in the country. For reference, this is when these well-known companies were founded: the New York Stock Exchange (1792), Jim Beam (1795), Pratt-Read (1798), DuPont (1802), Colgate (1806) and Citigroup (1812). 35. Ohio

  • Brand: Malco Products
  • Tools & equipment known for: Tools for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) professionals
  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 16,800

Of the 237 brands looked at, it was Malco Products that peaked Ohio’s interest the most respective to total searches and other state’s. Malco only has 16,800 total annual searches across the country. A few extra searches within a region could send it trending. And as it happens there are two Malco Products – one based in Minnesota and one in Ohio. The MN Malco is the HVAC tools and the OH Malco is automotive detailing and cleaning products. This is the likely reason for most (all?) searches for Malco Products originating in Ohio.

36. Oklahoma

  • Annual brand searches in U.S.: 468,000

Hilti, a family owned massive (~$5 billion revenue) power tools company, is based out of Liechtenstein. It is most popular in Oklahoma (also loved in Hawaii and Alaska). Nikola Tesla, a famous engineer and namesake of the electric car company, was an early consultant to Westinghouse and licensed his patents for an AC induction motor and transformer. Interestingly, the original Westinghouse Electric Corp. morphed into CBS (yes, the media company) when it bought it in 1995. Famous for their chainsaws, it is a Swedish company with global HQ in Huskvarna, Sweden. The predecessor company, a rifle factory, was founded in 1689. Over the years the company has been agile and moved from making rifles to sewing machines to bicycles to motorcycles to lawn mowers to chainsaws to chainsaw chains, and so on. At present they are a major manufacturer of outdoor power products like chainsaws and mowers. The probable reason Husqvarna is most popular in West Virgina is because of its popular chainsaws. WV is the third most heavily forested state (78% forest coverage). It makes sense that a popular living amongst that many trees would require a high proportion of chainsaws to people.

49. Wisconsin
